Sometimes it’s best to back out of an event instead of going for it, especially if you really aren’t ready for it. As I was writing this post, I canceled plans to run in a local race that I always do each year. My left ankle isn’t the best, it’s been humid, and my running this past week hasn’t been to my liking. So, intern, I have changed my mind and won’t be racing. This course is a somewhat harder one than others that I do. This is a bummer in that I was looking forward to it. Basically, you are saying to yourself, “Live To Race Another Day”. What this also does for you is to not only give yourself a chance to heel, but to give yourself more time in training and recovery for other races down the road. Rest is also best during this time as well. Besides, there is always next year for the event you are canceling plans for.
Listening to your body is a key point here. You would not want to over do it if your body is telling you otherwise. The saying “No Pain, No Gain” isn’t always the best thing to consider when deciding whether or not to “say when”.
