If you’ve been interested in running and haven’t yet gone from your fanny to your feet, get started now and please don’t wait as long as I did to start running. I didn’t start running until I was 35 years old and let me tell you, I wish I got into running long before that, but, that’s another story. Running is the easiest and cheapest sport on the planet to get involved with. Just grab a pair of sneakers and appropriate clothing and head out the door and you are on your way. Is it really that easy to get started? For the most part, yes! But, there are some things to consider before you get on your feet. Let’s create a checklist to get you started:
See a doctor to see how you stand You really need to have yourself checked out before getting into running or any other sport. You don’t want any unexpected issues tripping you up while you are out there. In addition to seeing what may or may not be an issue, your doctor may even give you a starting point as to where he or she would like to see your numbers at to give you an idea of your overall health. This is a great starting point. Not only that, this can be a good gauge to see how you stand each year on your road to improving your health.
2. Find a pair of sneakers. In a pinch, just about any kind of sneakers will do, but, for best results, you should get a pair of sneakers tailored for running. It’s what’s under your feet that matters while you are out there. Not sure what kind to get, just ask the associate at your favorite sports store for a good pair.
3. Seasonal or weather appropriate clothing. You want to be comfortable when you head out there to enjoy your run. It took me a long time just to adapt to running in the rain. I couldn’t see myself running in the rain, when I could be inside and dry. That was until I realized that if you run, you sweat, therefore you are wet! Consider your weather conditions when deciding what to wear before heading out. For cold weather, layers are good.
4. Start out slow.Remember, you are just starting out. You are not trying to win a race yet, or you shouldn’t be at this point. In addition to running, you should be doing some exercises too. A good resource for exercises for runners is runnersworld.com, they have some really good training videos. If you push yourself too soon, you may over do it and get turned off by the sport, or worse, end up getting injured.
These for steps will get you out the door and on your way as a beginner, but, as the last step points out, start out slow.

Adding an active life can be as simple or as advanced as you want. Start out small and grow from there. Just 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week is enough to get you started until you build yourself up. Get up 30 minutes earlier on the days you choose to “get active”. After a while, you’ll start to know the difference. Once you find your focus, you’ll open a door that will rock your world. As for me, you know, I’m a runner and cannot live without it!
There is an activity out there for everyone, find it, do it and you’ll see the difference. For those who say “Well, Tim, I don’t have the time!” I say, “20 minutes, and a DVD player and you can have a workout. There are plenty of workout videos available on DVD out there now and that’s just for starters. If something is important to you, you’ll make the time for it. Don’t wait until you reach the point where you wish you did do something, do it now! Even if you have to do a series of exercises in the morning just to get started. What ever it takes for you to get started and explore the world of fitness. If you still feel you don’t have time, perhaps there are those things you are doing that you should replace with fitness? How much time do you spend just watching TV?
Check out our section called NEWU, it may be what can help you get started.

Whether you are just starting out to loosing weight, or you’ve been making progress, over the course of your efforts, you are learning new things about how to get you from where you were, to where you want to be. This is not always an easy road to tread. It doesn’t matter how overweight or underweight you are. Cutting back, controlling your portions and taking vitamins / supplements are only part of the solution.
Unless you are trying to gain weight, you should consider some way to increase your activity. Even if you are working on gaining weight, exercise at some level is always good. By increasing your activity, whether it be running (my favorite), walking, riding bike, or even joining a gym, you’ll be increasing the effort to burn those calories. So, by making this choice, here is what you are doing:
1. Eating right (portion control and watching the types of food you are eating)
2. Taking supplements / vitamins
3. Exercise / increased activity
You’ve now started a brand new way of living, thus, enter a new lifestyle of fitness which will bring about a whole new you. After a while, you’ll begin to look back and say good bye to the old you that you once new. Now the list above, is only the beginning or a good starting point. You can pick and choose later what works best for you as you learn your way in this new lifestyle. Remember, it is a lifestyle and not a “diet”.
Now, if you are trying to gain weight, there are products/supplements available to help you in this direction. While portion control would not be an issue where, you would still want to be aware of how much you are taking in, especially when you start gaining weight so as not to over shoot your goals.
A brief on Portion Control:
Why is Portion Control so important? Well, for one thing, without it, all your other efforts would be a waist of time. You would be just spinning your wheels which will get you nowhere.

It’s amazing, but, the human body is like a machine. I recently had my annual physical and all my numbers were withing a good range. My blood pressure was perfect! As all my other numbers were well within or near where they should be. Like your fuel gauge and other indicators in a car, is something is off, you know something is wrong. Staying fit with exercising and eating right is all I am doing.
With yummy Herbalife Meal Replacement shakes, and other supplements, you can do the same thing too! I have lost over 20 pounds and intend on loosing more. I was overweight, for my size and didn’t realize where I should be. So, I started out at 187.7 and am down to into the mid 160’s I’m thinking that my current goal is at least 160. How’s your machine? Think about it.

Each time you reach for a soda, you are grabbing for some liquid candy. That’s all it is minus a wrapper like a candy bar would have. A can or bottle with liquid, sugars and other additives that are not healthy. Want to loose some more weight? Stop drinking this stuff and you’ll see the picture.
